WALPOLE STORAGE · PLANNING
Storage during a renovation
Clearing a home for renovation works best when the collection, storage period and return sequence are planned together.
Separate the work area from the occupied home
List the rooms that need clearing and the rooms that will remain in use. Identify which furniture and cartons need long-term storage, which can stay elsewhere in the home and which essentials must remain accessible. A defined inventory is more useful than asking to clear everything without deciding what happens to it.
Ask the contractor when each room must be empty and whether the route through the property will remain usable. Keep those requirements separate from your preferred collection day. Explain any dusty, unfinished or restricted areas when discussing the work so the team can review access and timing before the appointment.
Plan collection around the actual belongings
Record furniture individually and estimate carton counts by room. Flag pieces requiring disassembly or extra handling review, and include stairs, elevators and the collection loading position. Confirm who will pack, prepare and protect the items going into storage. Label hardware and components so the furniture can be identified when it returns.
Set aside the things you need while the work continues: daily clothing, personal documents, medication and a practical household essentials group. Access to crated storage is scheduled through the team, rather than available as 24/7 self-storage access. If part of the inventory may be needed before the project ends, raise that while planning collection.
Make the return a separate decision point
Give an expected return period, but explain which dates depend on the contractor. Before requesting delivery, confirm that the intended rooms and the carry route are ready. A room plan helps place large furniture once, and a current inventory helps identify which groups should come back first if the return will happen in stages.
Ask how retrieval, handling, delivery and any assembly will be reviewed, and update the team if the scope or address changes. The furniture-preparation guide covers the collection conversation, while the staged-return checklist helps organize a phased delivery. Keep the collection inventory, accepted estimate and return notes together so changes remain visible throughout the renovation.
