WALPOLE STORAGE · PLANNING
Build a crate inventory that works for the return
Plan a long-term storage inventory with room labels, numbered cartons, furniture notes and a clear return sequence before collection.
Begin with the return, not the empty room
A useful storage inventory answers more than “what did we put away?” It also helps explain where the belongings should go when they come back. Start with a list of rooms or destination zones, then record the furniture and cartons that belong in each. If you do not know the return address yet, use broad categories that will still make sense in another home.
Keep daily essentials, documents, medication, valuables and anything you expect to use during the storage period with you. Long-term crated storage works best when routine access is not part of the plan. If a group may need to return early, identify that before collection so the team can review the access and handling arrangements.
Give cartons simple, durable identities
Use a short carton number and a clear room label. Keep the fuller contents on your own inventory, rather than putting private details on the outside. “Kitchen, carton 12” is easier to match later than several boxes all marked “miscellaneous.” Choose labels you can read without opening the carton.
Record a brief description that will help you recognize the group, such as everyday dishes, spare linens or books from the study. You do not need to publish a detailed list of sensitive possessions. Keep your copy somewhere accessible during the storage period, rather than inside a box going into storage.
List furniture and preparation separately
Write down large pieces one by one, including the number of parts for a sectional, bed or table. Note dimensions when they matter for collection or the eventual destination. Explain any disassembly and where labeled hardware will be kept. Photos can help describe the item and existing condition during the planning conversation.
Ask the team what preparation and protective materials are included in the estimate. Dry, clean belongings and a clear handling plan are useful starting points, but do not assume every item needs the same treatment. Flag unusual materials, delicate pieces and anything that may require separate handling review before the appointment.
Agree on the recorded collection scope
Compare your room list with the work being quoted. Include stairs, elevator access, the vehicle loading position and the number of collection locations. The final accepted inventory and storage arrangement are confirmed with the team; your planning list supports that conversation and does not replace it.
If the item list changes before collection, send the update. A few extra cartons or a large additional piece can affect packing, handling and the storage plan. Avoid relying on a room count alone when the actual belongings are known.
Keep the return sequence visible
Identify what should be delivered first and which rooms should receive the larger pieces. For a staged return, list the requested groups together with your preferred dates and address. Retrieval is scheduled through the team, with availability, handling and any charges reviewed before the appointment.
